Arweave (AR), Announces Its Test Network!

Arweave (Ar)

Arweave released a test network for an “abnormally scalable” computing layer designed for social media and artificial intelligence. Arweave AO was built as a scalable blockchain network based on a data storage platform.

By the year 2023, the team focused on using Arweave for a social media network. While they were working on plans to use tokens to represent content ownership, they realized that an extremely scalable network was needed to support a market for such tokens. Afterwards, they decided to make a second attempt.

And then we said, all right, let’s get rid of those plans, can we finish it? Can we make it work? And then we realized that yes, we could. Then we started building.
– Arweave founder Sam Williams

About a month ago, the team created an internal test network they named Arweave AO. Williams noted that it is currently running on 220 different machines and that a few projects have started building on it, before the test network was opened to the public on Tuesday.

At the same time, activity increased on the main Arweave chain. Williams noted that the network has now seen 3 billion transactions, with 1 billion of them occurring in less than two months. This also led to a move to deflation for the platform’s local token, AR.

The plan moving forward is to perform a few audits for Arweave AO and plan its main network, which the team expects to happen in 2024.

How Does Arweave AO Work?

Arweave is a decentralized data storage platform used for everything from storing metadata for NFTs to developer tools.

Arweave AO, built on this platform, was designed to be a scalable network that could support all kinds of smart contracts and blockchain protocols.

The main concept is to split the three main components that run a blockchain into separate pieces and transform these pieces into components that can communicate with each other and execute a high number of transactions simultaneously.

The team built an operating system named AOS on top of Arweave AO using the Lua programming language. This language is also used in games like Roblox and Angry Birds. Williams mentioned that it would be possible to build a blockchain or any other virtual machine that is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine on top of Arweave AO.

Williams emphasized that the difference between Arweave AO and other high-performance blockchains like Aptos and Sui is its ability to support things like large amounts of data storage. This originates from the project being based on a data storage platform at its core.
