Elon Musk refuted claims that he discussed crypto with 2024 Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump.
“Pretty sure I’ve never discussed crypto with Trump, although I am generally in favor of things that shift power from the government to the people, which crypto can do,” Musk posted on X, the social media site he controls.
Responding to a post quoting a Bloomberg article, the Tesla CEO said Musk advised Trump on cryptocurrencies and proposed having the billionaire speak at the forthcoming Republican national convention. Late Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal said Trump was mulling a “possible advisory role” for Musk should the former president recover the White House in this November’s election.

The two talked about how Musk may have “formal input and influence” over border security and economic policy, according to the paper. Following a Trump meeting in Florida, Musk stated in March, “To use his clout… to help defeat Biden by galvanizing the support of influential allies,” the WSJ reported, citing someone familiar with his thinking.
Trump has expressed doubts about cryptocurrencies in the past, but he seems to be adjusting his opinion. Not long before his planned speech at the Libertarian National Convention last week, Trump declared he was “positive and open-minded” toward the crypto sector. He also supported pardon for Ross Ulbricht, who created the dark web bazaar Silk Road and has 11 years of a life sentence.
Over the past two weeks, President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign has been contacting crypto sector stakeholders for direction on “crypto community and policy,” according to people The Block contacted. The sources observed a notable “shift” in tone from the Biden campaign towards crypto.
With his regular tweets and memecoin endorsements, Musk—the richest person in the world—helped dogecoin rise to all-time highs in the summer of 21. Musk suggested last March that ultimately customers might be able to buy Tesla cars using the Dogecoin cryptocurrency.
Musk declared in December 2023 that he seldom spends any time considering cryptocurrencies.
