Solana

Solana Mobile is planning to launch a second phone following the unexpected success of its first crypto-focused smartphone, Saga, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The upcoming phone will have the same basic features as its predecessor, Saga, including an onboard crypto wallet, custom Android software, and a “dApp store” for crypto applications – but at a more affordable price and with different hardware, the person said. The original phone cost $1,000 when it first launched last year but prices had dropped following tough sales.

Solana Mobile Phone

The new Solana Mobile phone could help to tamp down the red-hot secondary market for existing Saga smartphones, which are in limited supply. At press time, a factory-sealed Saga device was fetching bids of up to $3,200 on eBay, five times more than its price five weeks ago.

At the time, Saga’s supporters were preparing to give up on their experimental phone, which aimed to create a mobile platform for crypto investors and NFT collectors, but were struggling to find a large enough market to justify its existence.

That all changed instantly the moment crypto investors realized that the phone came bundled with BONK tokens that far exceeded the price of the device. Saga sold out in less than a week.

In the months that followed, Saga phones continued to generate dividends for owners. Various projects airdropped valuable tokens and NFTs for the 15,000 phones that are in the hands of people all over the world. These airdrops helped to bolster the community around Saga and encouraged more Solana developers to consider building mobile applications.
