Why is Mt.Gox verifying Bitcoin addresses?

After bank repayments began in December 2023, the Mt.Gox trustee is preparing for BTC and BCH repayments from Bitstamp and Kraken accounts. Following the Mt.Gox hack, the trustee reported that repayments were reaching creditors and that the identity and account verification processes were ongoing.

While creditors are required to verify their identities and accounts for repayments, Mt.Gox creditors are reporting that they are receiving new emails notifying them of identity verification for crypto exchange accounts that will be used to repay Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash.

In an email posted to Mt.Gox’s bankruptcy forum on January 22, it was stated that the crypto exchange specified in users’ rehabilitation claims had been verified by the trustee. The email reveals that this exchange is now preparing to accept agency receipts subscriptions for users to receive repayments in BTC/BCH.

The translation of the email states, “Please note that if your account is disabled or frozen in the future, you may not be able to receive repayment in BTC or BCH.”

Several Reddit users have confirmed that they have received such an email from the Mt.Gox trustee and that most of these approvals have come from the Bitstamp exchange. A few Kraken users have also reported receiving approval emails, while most Kraken users have not reported receiving these emails yet.

Mt.Gox is expected to repay its creditors 69 billion Japanese yen (US$510 million) by October 2024, as well as 142,000 Bitcoin and 143,000 Bitcoin Cash.
