Skild AI Secures $300M Series A Funding from Jeff Bezos

Skild Ai

Emerging from stealth recently, artificial intelligence company Skild AI reported the effective closure of a $300 million Series A fundraising round, including Softbank and Jeff Bezos, among others.

A Carnegie Mellon spinout, Skild AI aims to create a general-purpose brain—an AI system capable of being retrofitted to different machines and robotics devices.

Major Investors and Fundraising Effort

A company blog post claims that Lightspeed Venture Partners, Coatue, SoftBank Group, and Jeff Bezos (via Bezos Expeditions) led the $1.5 billion fundraising effort at a valuation of Additionally involved were Felicis Ventures, Sequoia, Menlo Ventures, General Catalyst, CRV, Amazon, SV Angel, and Carnegie Mellon University.

Skild AI’s Ambitious Goals

Joining OpenAI, Anthropic AI, xAI, and many other companies striving to create human-level artificial general intelligence (AGI), Skild AI marks the newest unicorn to enter the AI field with a lofty objective. AGI is a fuzzy word with no scientific meaning, nevertheless, and this should be noted. Scientists and engineers cannot agree on exactly what would make all the difference between a strong artificial intelligence system and a real AGI system. AGI is now only theoretical. To the best of our knowledge, the scientific method has thus far yielded no data indicating AGI is a basic possibility.

Future Developments and Potential Partners

Apart from shattering the AGI barrier, Skild AI seems to be aiming for ground-floor robot operating systems. The blog post claims that Skild AI’s long-term aim is to create a modular artificial “brain” that can be modified for usage in almost any house that satisfies its power and connectivity needs. As to how this good or service will be developed, specifics are yet few.

The funding statement made no mention of any specifics regarding the roadmaps or alliances of the organization. Based on their combined involvement in the funding round, we can hypothesize, though, that Jeff Bezos or Amazon could be lining up business with the company. Other robotics-oriented businesses, like Boston Dynamics, who aren’t exactly in the business of developing human-level artificial intelligence systems to run them, could also be complementary business partners.

Infrastructure and Amazon’s Role

Regarding pure speculation, we can suppose that the evolution of an artificial intelligence brain will entail a large-scale infrastructure akin to those required for ChatGPT development by OpenAI and xAI development. This would rank chipmakers like Nvidia and AMD highest on the corporate list, but there is also a Jeff Bezos and Amazon connection. Arguably the most used cloud service platform worldwide, Amazon possesses a large GPU cluster used for training their Bedrock AI system.
